Learning and Innovation in Agriculture and Rural Development: The Use of the Concepts of Boundary Work and Boundary Objects
2015
Purpose: The paper explores the role of boundary work and boundary objects in enhancing learning and innovation processes in hybrid multi-actor networks for sustainable agriculture (LINSA). Design/Methodology/Approach: Boundary work in LINSA is analysed on the basis of six case studies carried out in SOLINSA project under a common methodology. In developing typologies of boundary work and objects, a grounded approach is used. Findings: LINSA analysis demonstrates the dynamic character, diverse forms and multiple functions of boundary work and objects in three domains: learning, innovation, and sustainability. Addressing specific types of goals and actors leads to specific types of boundary …
Removal of acetone from air emissions by biotrickling filters: providing solutions from laboratory to full-scale
2018
A full-scale biotrickling filter (BTF) treating acetone air emissions of wood-coating activities showed difficulties to achieve outlet concentrations lower than 125 mg C m-3, especially for high inlet concentrations and oscillating emissions. To solve this problem, a laboratory investigation on acetone removal was carried out simulating typical industrial conditions: discontinuous and variable inlet concentrations and intermittent spraying. The results were evaluated in terms of removal efficiency and outlet gas emission pattern. Industrial emissions and operational protocols were simulated: inlet load up to 70 g C m-3 h-1 during 2 cycles of 4 h per day and intermittent trickling of 15 min …
THE DESIGN OF AN INFRASTRUCTURE FOR TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER IN SOUTHERN ITALY– ROLE OF REGIONAL INSTITUTIONS
1980
This paper coordinates and integrates the interventions of Proff. G. LO GIUDICE and A. ROMANO, included in the conference programme. It starts mainly from the socio-economical system of Southern Italy, and it consists in the following main points: - analysis of the system features to be interconnected for the development of an infrastructure for developing technological transfer; - ways of understanding the suitability of technologies for Southern Italy; - a proposal for a macro-organizational model for the development of an infrastructure aiming at the technological transfer; - pointing out the role of the “Regioni” and of the direct Government interventions in the innovative processes. (I…
Entrepreneurial universities: A bibliometric analysis within the business and management domains
2021
Abstract This study presents a bibliometric analysis of scientific publications investigating entrepreneurial universities in the business and management fields. The authors collected 511 documents from the Web of Science and analysed them using Bibliometrix, an RStudio package for performance analysis and science mapping. The study aims to provide an overview of the evolution of research about this topic and describe the structures (i.e., conceptual, social, and intellectual) characterising it. It discusses the results to identify the main areas addressed so far and highlight gaps in the literature, offering avenues for possible future research. The results show that publications on entrep…
Fuel for commercial politics: the nucleus of early commercial proliferation of atomic energy in three acts
2020
Historical research into the nuclear industry has focussed upon military and commercial aspects of the technology whilst ignoring fuel. This article discusses nuclear fuel, the resource at the centre of the industry and the role superpower politics played in its supply. Starting with the context of superpower competition, we examine the spread of nuclear technology from its beginnings in post-war Britain via West Germany in the 1950s to Finland in the 1960s and 1970s. We demonstrate that each country had varied interests affecting the choice of nuclear fuel for early energy projects; British fuel choices were constrained by its weapons programme and Germany needed legitimacy in the face of …
Fostering university-industry collaborations through university teaching
2019
Unversity-industry links and their impact on innovation processes have been widely acknowledged. However, previous studies have mainly examined university-industry knowledge transfer activities from the perspective of the research and third stream missions. This paper goes a step further, analysing such processes from the perspective of the university’s teaching mission. More specifically, it explores how educational crowdsourcing platforms help bring universities and industry together to develop joint activities in undergraduate and graduate programmes. Nine platforms with different business models were examined. A qualitative exploratory approach was adopted to manually collect and analys…
Knowledge flow in Technological Business Incubators: Evidence from Australia and Israel
2015
The study of the contribution of incubators to economic growth started to gain momentum in the 1980s, following the growth of the incubation phenomenon. While acknowledging the challenge of evaluating incubators׳ outcomes, we shift the focus from incubators׳ performance to their internal processes, in particular, the interrelationships through which the incubator stakeholders share knowledge. The literature suggests that small new ventures tend to fail because they lack managerial experience and ability to raise capital in an early stage. Incubators are expected to overcome these obstacles by offering experienced monitoring skills and by enhancing access to capital at a firm׳s early stage. …
Educación XX1 : revista de la Facultad de Educación
2016
Institutionalization of technology transfer organizations in Chinese universities
2015
There is a lack of in-depth studies on how technology transfer organizations (TTOs) are organized and developed. This paper examines the evolution/institutionalization of TTOs in Tsinghua University (TU), as a microcosm of the development of TTOs in Chinese universities. It explores two issues in particular: what kinds of TTOs have been developed in TU and why some organizational forms become more institutionalised than others. In so doing, an analytical framework is developed by synthesizing the literature on organizational innovation and institutionalization. The analysis is based on extensive review of academic literature and policy documents, as well as on face-to-face interviews with p…
Leading Trends in Technology Transfer
2021
The Journal of Technology Transfer (JOTT) published its first issue in 1977. Since this first issue, the JOTT has made major contributions to its field. This chapter uses dynamic bibliometric techniques and the Scopus database to analyze all JOTT issues published between 1977 and 2018. Citations are considered up to and including September 30, 2019. The primary objective is to determine the leading research trends in technology transfer by analyzing the most influential studies published in the JOTT and studying their evolution. The evolution of these research trends suggests that entrepreneurial universities, university-industry collaboration, and knowledge management have become the leadi…
